Christmas Craft – The Completion

I had a couple of challenges finishing these up but nothing that really mattered much at all when it really comes down to the finished project. When I sewed the back pieces on – I did them wrong side out so the pretty pattern pieces I had to color coordinate with the manes is on the inside of the pillows and there is plain white on the outside. But it’s okay. They washed up super nice – even nicer that I thought they would and the manes got all crinkly which just added even more character to them.

They are not exact, but similar. One has more of a roman nose than the other one – but they are so stinking cute I can’t stand it. The pillow inserts that I got were for a rounder pillow, but they worked out too. So I really can’t say there is too much that I am overly dissatisfied with on this project!!!

The first thing the girls started doing with these when they opened the was start braiding the manes – now, how stinking cute is that!!!!

Christmas Craft – Quilting

Okay, so this was my most feared part of this whole project – yet I wasn’t freaking out as much as I thought I was going to when it came right down to it.

My hubby had brought me home a large doodle pad (2 feet x 3 feet to be exact) so I took that out and tried to play with some design ideas to give me something to start with. Well, when you bring out something new in my house you get a lot of help with it – always. Every being in my house was very interested in what I was doing today.

But I came up with a plan or at least some doodles to use as reference

I pulled thread out of my stash, setup some samples and started. I even used a star ruler that I’ve had here forever. I did some feathers, some stacked hearts, an exploding star – I just kepting going and going.

The most surprising thing is that it didn’t really take as long as I thought it would.

I am so loving how these are coming together.

Christmas Craft – Piecing

I was making 2 of these, in reverse – so that they would face each other when put on beds.  So it was a bit trying to do it both ways at the same time.  I finally just concentrated on one (the one that was the same direction as the pattern) and when I completed one section I would put a copy of all the pieces I used into a pile for the second one (which should be much easier ?).  So here’s a throw back for ya – see that iron there in the middle of the picture – it was a wedding gift some 38+ years ago and it’s still kicking!  Try to find something new that lasts that long now a days!

They are not exactly the same, but what is?  It feels so good to have this part done, but then I realized I have the most trying part to do and that was the actual quilting of these. I am so intimidated when it comes to using my HQSS machine – I hope I don’t fail after all the work I have done on this project when it comes to the next step.

Christmas Craft – It’s a Mane thing

So most of today was spent putting together a plan for the mane’s on these pillows.

And that was no small feet – these manes were very unruly!

I pinned them and then flipped it – its a bit unorthodox, but what you can’t see in the photos is that the white material is actually a flannel – gives the unicorns a texture all their own – a bit magical.

So as I got the manes done I was going to start on the piecing – well, I think my sewing machine wanted a break after sewing those

manes together – I needed to do a simple join – 45 degree of two pieces, and this is want I ended up with. I took it as a time to go to bed. I will tackle the piecing of the faces tomorrow.

Christmas Crafts – the beginning

Well, I hinted at it earlier, but I finally got my 2 crafting presents done – and a bit early at that. By early I mean I wasn’t gluing or taping things in the car on the way to Christmas.

It started with a pattern and ended with 2 little girls carrying around pillows that were almost as big as they are.

I actually started working on this project on 12/18 – so getting 2 of these done in a week is pretty good – especially for me. I used only stuff from my stash (which was great) – even the batting was left overs. The only thing I purchased was the pillow forms that I got from Walmart for $12/each.

The pattern and just evolved from there.

I pulled all the Pinks and Purples from my stash ( which was awesome  to be able to use so much of stuff that I have sitting around in such a great way) and started making the strips for the mane.

When I started pulling and cutting strips for the mane I wanted to make, I had varying widths of strips.

What we soon found out was that the thinner strips really gave us a lot of trouble when turning them right side out after sewing so we didn’t use all that we had made.

But with my hubby’s help we sat one evening and pulled those strips right side out.

Once these were all done the task for the next day was to start piecing the top.
