Everything is coming up Green

Well, green triangles that is.

I did get to work on another of these block this weekend. However, working with triangles is a lot more tedious than working with small squares.

I thought it was sometimes hard finding the 15 3 1/2″ squares needed to do one of the Geese Migration blocks – that’s nothing compared to what you need to do a triangle one.

Quilt Minnesota Geese Migration

so I got obsessed with the way these blocks are turning out. This doesn’t always happen.

You know the drill – see a finished quilt, love a finished quilt, get the pattern, find and get material (or buy the kit), put it together and it looks nothing like the one you originally saw.  But so far so good on this one.

AND I actually emptied another project box – WOooWOoo.

This one is made with scraps from the Quilt Minnesota fabrics from a few years ago.  I think I have 3 quilts in the “WTBQ” container out of this fabric and have used pieces in other scrappy projects.  Using these fabrics for this block was quite the task. I did fussy cutting for the side blocks, used a left over vertical strip that was in the box for 1 row, but I also fussy cutted the pieces for the flying geese. I spent all of yesterday afternoon snipping pieces to fit just right. And it turned out great – I think!!!

New Project – 2021

So this is so going the wrong way. I now have 0 empty project boxes.  I had 3, but I started organizing some things (bindings that I had made randomly or left over, minky fabric, etc) and then today, I made 2 blocks for a new project.  This is not good, not good, I tell ya!

I have loved this scrappy block “Geese Migration” since the first time I saw it, but it always looked overwhelming at the same time.  So when I was doing the flying geese to finish this project I had some flying geese blocks left over. Then I realized that I had some small pieces left over also and things started to ping. Since I already had the flying geese done, no sense wasting them – especially since I had enough other pieces to complete this one block that I love love love.

So I did it, after completing the Blue, Brown and Green top – I kept going and pieced together not 1, but 2 of these blocks.

The bad thing: now I am thinking of what other project boxes I can go in and make some more of these blocks.

These are a large block – 15 1/2″ .  I am going to have to come to terms with the fact that since I am going to do this as a scrappy quilt, and I am committing to not buy any fabric to make these blocks (not sure if I’m doing sashing or not – I know I won’t have anything enough to do that so I would have to buy some for that) and some of my project boxes have some really outrageous colors schemes. I know that I have 2 if not 3 boxes that are pink based – bright pink. But that’s part of a scrappy quilt.  So I am off to a great start 2 of ?? are done!!!!!

Blues, Browns and Greens

This was a project of many degrees.

So had a “smart” idea of using all the left over cuts offs from another quilt project and I am almost ashamed to say I started this left over one in Jan 2019.

I did do a couple more rows/columns – depending on how you look at it.Once I got the rows put together, I had to ‘lengthen’ one of them, but that’s ok. I made the ‘choice’ to add the minky which I don’t know how I feel about it yet. I think the big challenge here is going to be the actual quilting of this one. But it’s done, looks cool, I got to do some blocks I haven’t done before. All in all it’s another top completed. This one will stay in it’s project box because I have the material for the backing and binding. So I will just keep it all together so it doesn’t get matched up to something else.

Blocks: Flying Geese, Half-square Triangles, Left over cuts from other block,  4 patch, braid, strips collected

There’s always a plan – A, B, C…

I just keep going deeper and deeper with this first box, who knows what’s gonna happen with the other 30 boxes I have to work thru.

I have changed the design/layout of this quilt so many times, I hardly remember where it started.

So I am NOW making 2 blocks with a star in the middle.

I got both of them laid out, then had to take a breath – I only had a certain amount of background fabric available so I wanted to make sure I had a plan going forward.

Went step by step – slowly – working on one star at a time (not my usual plow ahead full blast doing both at the same time. I will have to say that I am pretty proud of how the first one turned out.  Now on to the second one – with only a couple of notes from the first one (mostly on seem pressing).

2021 – first project box opened

Back to strips

I have worked on these strips off and on for 3 weeks, but I had to finally put them aside.

I calculated out how much background/filler fabric I will need and I just don’t have that much laying around. So I am putting these aside for now – with the other projects that are started and waiting for fabric.

I have enough cut to do 9 – 8 point stars. Now I just need the filler fabric.  I better start watching for a good sale somewhere.

Strips on the docket today

I have had this fabric in a container and planned so many times on what to do with it, I finally just pulled out the bin and started cutting strips.  I have 8 different ideas, and I’m sure I will come up with another 4 plans before I actually start sewing them together.
