Spring Quilt – completed

Well February was consumed with digital work. I was moving hosting companies and creating sites for a few new customers – so there was little to no time for my physical passions (crafting)!

March started out as the month of cleaning out the stash – and now I’m stuck home with the stash!!!

As I was going thru the many, many kits I have and deciding which pile to put them in  “keep or get rid of ” I ran across a little baby quilt that I pieced together a couple of years ago. I even had it attached to a backing – it was just waiting for “quilting” !  So I just quilted it. I actually had all the quilting done in one afternoon and did the binding the next morning.

I even pushed the limits a little on this one – I wrote words in the outer boarder – which didn’t turn out too bad considering it was done with no planning!

 

 

 

The backing is a piece of red fleece. No one told me what a nightmare fleece was to work with. The quilting part went ok, but there is lint everywhere. My cutting board has red lines  all over it from when I was trimming it, lint in both sewing machines (I just got my domestic one back from having it serviced in February). I will have to think twice about using fleece again. I did some simple outlining of the images in the panel and that turned out so cute and on the back too.

Fall Foliage

Again, I was moving some stuff around and I ran across another “package”.

This was a simple pattern – that thru out a challenge as that all the strips were cut “LOF” – length of fabric. I’ve never had a pattern call out that type of cutting and it’s not as easy as it sounds.

It’s an odd sized pattern and I pushed it a bit too. There was so much fabric that I extended the width and length to use as much fabric and the complete panel as possible.  But it will make a cool wall hanging or a lap quilt for 2.

Update 12-4 – I was able to get a full picture today.

Butterflies are free

I hate to even admit to how long I have had some of these kits that I am finding.

This one is not my usual colors and because it is a possible christmas gift for someone I am not going to show the whole thing yet. (which also means I have to actually complete this one in the next 6 weeks – ugh!).

Such beautiful colors in this that you wouldn’t naturally associate to butterflies but it turned out beautiful.

Run Free Run Wild complete – finally!

Well, I got this one done a few days late. I was hoping to have it done by Nov 1, but I ran into a couple of problems and a few “re-do’s” and a whole lot of ripping was going on with this one.

I do have to do applique around the parts that are overflowing into the black from the panel – but I have to figure out what is the best way to do that for this situation. I originally started with 5 colors on each end, but I just didn’t like how it was ending – it just dropped off. Even though the last little piece is tiny it just makes it look more complete. I was going to put another 3″ border on the top and bottom but I just really liked how this looked when I hung it up. It probably could be shortened up but I just really like how it is.

I have seen this pattern done both ways – with the top and bottom gradients pointing in and pointing out. To be honest the original plan was to have it pointing away from the boarder, but because of a mess up when I put it together the second time, it ended up like this and I’m okay with that. I think it really highlights the panel this way.

Another thing about this quilt top that was really cool is that the gradients were all in my stash –  part of a set of fat quarters I purchased 5+ years ago. The Panel I had from 2011 so the only thing I “purchased” for this was the black background. And I had actually just purchase 5 yards of Kona Black from Joanns with a coupon – so I did actually empty a project box out of the tower on this one!

Run Free Run Wild Panel

One  more, why not… I’ve had this one in a project box for so long – How long?

Well the magazine that had the panel was Quilters World August 2011 – I’m not making that pattern, just using the panel for a different layout. Which is turning out to be a bit more complicated than I thought it was. But I love the challenge of piecing it together.  I am going to do the “Highlight” technique that the article was highlighting which will be another whole challenge in itself.

I am using black for the background and using a set of fat quarters that I’ve had for more than 10 years, sitting in a project box too. 

I am, however, going to need another large container to hold all the tops that I have done that are waiting for “quilting” as the first one is stuffed full and I will have 5 more to add to it already. 6 if you could the one I started in September.

Stars at Bear Cabin – Done

I got this one done, just under the wire (my goal is to finish them up by Friday).

This one is huge, 86″ unfinished square – the pattern is originally 75×85 I decided to use the panel in this a little differently then the pattern calls for and luckily I had just enough extra fabric that I could pull it off.

It was hard getting a picture of the finished thing – breezy day and it’s so long – I really don’t have someplace to hang something this big to take a picture. So it’s not a very good picture but overall it looks very nice.

So the changes I did:

  • Rather than use the panel as center pieces for the stars, i used the panel to extend the sides.
  • Moved the bear paw out to the corners of the inside (now square)
  • I made 6 extra stars so that I could square it off.
  • Added a burgundy for the stars & dark brown for the log cabin centers.
  • the inside sashing is not quite as wide as it was called for but I made it to fit the now extended sides.

I still ended up with a good amount of fabric left – not the outer boarder – 2 pieces 6×10 and 1 piece 3xWOF – I so lucked out on that for sure.   I did lay it on my queen size bed and it does cover it with a 4 inch or so hang over.

I did notice when I had the center log cabin circle put together that I do not have them arranged quite right. But they went together so  nicely that I just couldn’t pull it apart – so that is a bit annoying but it really did go together nicely.

Huge Bear Claw

This is my favorite color pallet in the world!!! This one may take me a bit longer to complete – the panel in this kit/pattern is used only as a small part of the blocks – so there is a lot more piecing to do on it.

 

Kit #4 under way.  This pattern starts from the inside out – center medallion is done – 20″ square.

I had a really hard time with this one for a couple of reasons:

  1. The kit was made up with Batiks – never again – I hate using Batiks, especially in patterns that aren’t written specifically for them.
  2. You have to be Okay – no you have to be very comfortable sewing triangles (on the bias) – let alone using batiks.
  3. Pattern instructions were difficult to follow – pictures/examples were not always with the words.
  4. Even though the panel that was used was on the cover of the pattern – there is no way the dimensions in the directions were correct.   It said to cut the panel to 44 1/2 inches wide. Well in order to make the side border (3 blocks) fit I had to add a 2″ strip, by adding that strip all around (because it would have been uneven to have a 1/2″ strip on the top and bottom) I had to cut another 2″ off the panel.

So it done, I lost a lot of the tips of triangles, but I am okay with how it turned out. And it was a blustery day again here today so taking the picture was tough to do.

Off to pull the next one out of the kit container.

Running Horses

Well, 2 down off to the next one.

I didn’t know this kit used batiks for the boarders/piecing – I hate working with batiks. The material is so thin and the fabric is usually only about 40″ wide – makes it a bit more challenging to work with the pattern when the pattern generally basis their measurements on 44″ wide fabrics. But it’s all cut apart and now I just have to start putting things together.  I keep staring at the panel thinking of just how I am going to quilt this one. So many ideas…
